Should Barcelona change their formation, 4-2-1-3 or 4-2-3-1 or stick with 4-3-3 formation.

The break has given every team a chance to analyse their performance up till now. Any person who has saw all (or most) of barcelona matches would know, the main concern for barcelona has been their defence. Without any player coming to barcelona until the end of season

"How can Barcelona improve their Defence under Setien with same squad". 

The major concern in the defence has been the space that Barcelona leave when they attack, in the counter attack the opposition team has plenty of spaces to create chances, take a shot, switch the wings, put cross in the box. The major reason for this happening is lack of pace in the barcelona defence.

Our defence isn't very pacy and we all know that. In this lockdown period where, Only Bundesliga is back, Bayern have two very pacy full back in form of Alphonso Davies and Benjamin Pavard. Borrusia Dortmund have Hakimi and Guerreiro, they all have the pace and their contribution in goal are much high and therefore they are able to defend in counter attack becuase of the pace in their defending. 

4-3-3 formation

It has been one of the most used formation by the managers these days, and Barcelona are following it since long time. But at that time, barcelona squad was very different at the Full back position there was a young energetic Jordi Alba in the left wing and one of the most attack minded right back Dani Alves, they both have the pace and therefore, there wasn't as much problem in defending counter attack as it is today. 

And this season particularly, barca have conceded more goals in 27 matches than they have conceded in whole season in past few years. This year particularly teams have caught Barcelona defence taking a nap in matches. Also the other thing which team with not as much pace in defence do well is trapping the opposition team in Off-Side, but again this as also not implemented properly and hasnot solve the problem of barcelona defence. 

Would a formation change help Barcelona to perform better 

If Barcelona wants to improve their defence this season without any addition in team, they must atleast give a try to 4-2-1-3

 

In this formation there would be two Defensive Midfielder, Busquets and Frenkie de Jong they both are probably one of the best in this position. De Jong hasn't got much opportunity to play as a defensive midfielder this season because Busquets have played in that position, but nobody has a doubt how good he would be in defensive midfield position. This position will certainly help Barcelona to concede less goals. De Jong has pace (though it's quite underrated) to track back and he would be comfortable in this position. When a team counters next time there would be atleast 4-5 players who would track the opposition team attacker. Also as discussed Alba isn't the same as he was few years ago. Semedo is often accused of not going forward and not helping to create moves and sit little deep inside, but with this formation he would be under less pressure for doing his defensive duty. So there isn't many change in this formation compared to the one which Barcelona are currently playing. 

4-2-3-1

This formation would be the best, if we do consider Messi style of play in the last few years. Messi generally starts from the right wing and eventually he plays in a much central role, because of which there isn't much chances created from our right wing. But if Barcelona adopts this formation for the remainder of this season, it coulf be very helpful. There isn't much difference between the 4-2-1-3 formation and this one. Only change is Braithwaite in for Arthur. Braithwaite is a natural winger and he could play in both the wings. Also he has pace and he can create move from right wing also. This would be a great team if we consider Messi style of play but it would also benefit Barcelona defence as their are two solid Defensive Midfielder, also in the last few years, it has been seen that Messi drops deep to create move from Midfield.
